Sesshins
with Zentatsu Baker-roshi
Each year at Crestone Mountain Zen Center we hold
two seven-day sesshins: March 31 – April
8 and November 30 – December 8.
These are silent, seven-day intensive meditation
retreats, generally for practitioners who have
already established an on-going practice relationship
with our Sangha. To apply for sesshin, please
contact Abbot Zentatsu Baker Roshi or Assistant
Abbot Koyo Welch Roshi.
Meals during sesshin will be eaten oryoki style.
We ask that returning practitioners bring their
own oryoki set. Arrival is between 5 pm and 6
pm (before dinner), departure after a brunch on
the last day.
Monastic
Seminar with Zentatsu Baker-roshi
“Always Close” (10/19-24):
Placed in the middle of the Crestone Mountain
Zen Center Practice Study Month (see above), the
Monastic Seminar will combine a traditional meditation
schedule with lectures, study and discussions.
Baker Roshi will introduce and explore Koan #98
of the Book of Serenity – Dongshan’s
“Always Close.”
Meals will be eaten oryoki style. We ask that
returning practitioners bring their own oryoki
set. Arrival is between 5 pm and 6 pm on Tuesday,
departure after a brunch on Sunday around 11 am.
Seminars
with Zentatsu Baker-roshi
1. "Self Covers Everything"
(12/28 - New Year's Day): “Self Covers
Everything” – in this seminar, Baker
Roshi will explore and study this traditional
phrase, which was often used by Suzuki Roshi.
What could it mean? What kind of ‘self’
is this? How can this be located in your own practice?
Baker Roshi will develop the topic through lectures,
question and answer, open discussion, and small
groups.
Arrival is between 5 and 6 pm on Tuesday. The
first teaching session is Wednesday at 10 am.
On Friday evening (December 31) we will have a
festive dinner and a dance party, followed by
Zazen and 108 bells to welcome in the New Year.
The event ends with a brunch on New Year’s
Day.
2. Seminars in Boulder: Baker-roshi
continues to teach two seminars per year in Boulder.
"The Actualized Moment"
(1/29-31)
"Interdependence - Can We Live It?"
(4/23-25)
Both Boulder seminars are held
at the Chautauqua Community House. It is not necessary
for participants to have experience with Zen practice
or familiarity with Baker Roshi’s previous
seminars.
For further information and registration please
contact the Boulder
Zen Center.

“Our Lineage: Dongshan

will be framed by Zazen, service, oryoki meals
and work.

the Monastic Seminar (see below) taught by Baker
Roshi on Koan #98 of the Book of Serenity –
Dongshan’s “Always Close.”
If you want to participate in this Practice Study
Month, please download

The Crestone Resident Sangha will join the

Work
Month Intensive
From May 1 through June 13 we will dedicate one
and a half months to maintenance and work projects
in preparation for the Summer Guest Season. During
the Work Month we follow a more intensive work-oriented
schedule. The student fee is reduced for this
period from $35.00 to $15.00 per night. In addition
to the daily work schedule there will be morning
and evening Zazen meditation, a formal (oryoki)
meal at breakfast, and study. There will also
be a more informal lunch and supper. We ask that
returning practitioners bring their own oryoki
set.
Work
Exchange Program
The Work Exchange Program is designed to give
interested students the opportunity to participate
in our Zen programs and daily practice in exchange
for helping us with the cooking and housekeeping
during our Summer Guest Season. One day of work
earns one day of credit at the monastery. Students
may apply their credit towards sesshins, seminars,
short-term participation in practice period or
participation in our regular practice schedule.
(Please note that credit for work exchange does
not cover teaching donations or teaching fees.)
Your participation in our Summer Guest Season
is an important and deeply appreciated component
of Crestone Mountain Zen Center’s ability
to produce the income that allows us to maintain
and develop our facilities and sustain the practice
here. We hope that time spent here during the
Guest Season can also be a valuable learning experience
for you. Framed by daily morning and evening Zazen,
we work together in a highly cooperative and concentrated
way. In addition, with the guidance and supervision
of Koyo Dan Welch Roshi and the other experienced
cooks in residence, this can be an opportunity
to learn how to cook or to hone your already existing
cooking skills.
Work exchange is offered only during and around
our scheduled Guest Season events. Work exchange
dates are listed below. Positions for work exchange
are limited. Please contact us for availability.
June 22-29: Looking Outward,
Looking Inward (C. & G. Gray)
August 10-15: Hatha Yoga (Sofia Diaz)
September 7-12: Clear Light Sangha (Sharon Landrith)
Please let us know if you are interested in working
and practicing with us during these dates.
