Aikido and Zen 2026: Shizentai-the natural body

In aikido practice, shizentai is our "natural body," one of balanced uprightness which reveals our inherent capacity for unselfconscious responsiveness. Eihei Dogen speaks of zazen as "…the dharma gate of ease and joy." When we release into the posture of zazen, we feel at home, and connected. The sense of a separate self fades, and one of freedom emerges. As in zazen, in shizentai we find action in accord with our true nature. How are the physical and mental postures of shizentai and zazen alike? How do they manifest in our activity? These will be the themes of this year's Aikido and Zen Seminar, during which we explore how these practices inform and penetrate each other as we sit in meditation, engage in Aikido keiko, work together, share meals and speak with each other.

Led by Tres Hofmeister Shihan and Seishin Laurie Nusbaum, the format includes morning and evening zazen, Aikido keiko, and taking part in community life at Crestone Mountain Zen Center. There is also space in the schedule for walks, hikes, visits to notable sites on the mountain, and naps!

This seminar is open to those who already have some experience with aikido, or a similar martial art. Experience with meditation is helpful, but not required.

The seminar will begin Wednesday evening, September 23rd, and end after brunch on Sunday, September 27th.

Please join us for this weekend of practice and exploration.

Please note our cancellation policy.

What kind of clothing is appropriate for the zendo or for meditation?

In the meditation hall (zendo), we wear dark clothing that covers at least the shoulders and knees. In general, we recommend loose-fitting clothing that is not too tight or even constricting.
